Understanding DVR: The Process
The process of obtaining assistance from DVR is broken into 5 steps:
Eligibility, Assessment,
Plan Development, Employment, and
Closure. At each step of this process you will have certain
choices to make. Some will be required of you, while others are things
you may do to aid or speed up the process.
- Eligibility
Your disability is stopping you from getting or keeping a job that is suited
to your abilities. You require DVR's help to deal with the limitations
caused by your disability.
Choices: Choose to gather information instead of waiting for DVR
to do it for you.
- Assessment
How is your disability stopping you from getting or keeping a job that suits
your abilities? What can be done about it? Find information on your
abilities and jobs suited to them.
Choices: Choose the evaluators (with help from the DVR counselor).
Choose a Rehab Tech Specialist if accomodations are needed.
- Plan Development
Write and sign a plan that lists:
- How you will deal with your disability (i.e., treatment, medication, technology,
job site modification)
- Your job goal
- The services or training needed to be qualified for your job goal
Choices: Choose the job goal; gather information to see if the goal is
realistic; will I need accomodations?
- Employment
You will seek jobs in your chosen field or ask DVR for help from a job placement
specialist. Are specific job accomodations needed? Get them in place as soon as
possible.
Choices: Choose how you will seek a job. Choose a rehabilitation engineer
or specialist to look at accomodation needs.
- Closure
After 90 days on the job, DVR will close your case file. If you need help in the
future, you can apply again.
Choices: Choose to close your case.
